The majority of drones in the market right now are either quadcopters or hexacopters: multi-rotor UAVs designed for vertical takeoff and landing. Parrot has been making them since its first AR.Drone in 2010 and Parrot Bebop in 2014, but opted to go in a different direction with the Disco: a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that flies very differently from the others.

Parrot DISCO FPV Design

The Parrot Disco FPV designed to be something anyone can pick up and pilot -- and it is " like a plane". The lightweight fixed-wing aircraft (it's less than 700 grams or 1.6 pounds) is made made of expanded Polypropylene (EPP) foam and carbon tubes for reinforcement, with a single rear propeller strong enough to get the Disco up to about 50 mph (80 km) for flights up to 45 minutes.

The thruster on the left joystick can accelerate the drone to a max speed of 50mph, which can put it out of range quickly, so we tended to only use it for short bursts, especially when climbing or descending. We should note that Loiter radius and altitude is adjustable through sliders in the FreeFlight Pro app.

PARROT DISCO – COCKPITGLASSES "VR"

As with most new drones, there is a first-person view (FPV) headset for the Parrot Disco. The best thing is that it’s included in the box, too. It’s not as fancy as the optional DJI Goggles available for the Mavic Pro, because it requires you to use your smartphone, much like a Samsung Gear VR. You insert your chosen smartphone in and connect it via a USB cable to the Sky controller 2.

You can then get a direct bird’s eye view of the front camera, streamed at 720p resolution (although the camera can be recording in 1080p).

Of course, image quality will be dependent on what smartphone you choose to use, so it will help to use one with a high pixel density for the best experience.
